SmugMug alternative from Europe: a client gallery instead of a photo website

SmugMug alternative in euros: client gallery with face search, EU hosting and 32 guest languages against SmugMug’s unlimited-storage photo website (August 2026).

SmugMug is one of the oldest names in the business: on the market since 2002, owner of Flickr since 2018, unlimited photo storage in every plan. Photographers who search for a “SmugMug alternative” usually have one of three reasons: the bill comes in US dollars; the design and interface look dated next to younger providers; or SmugMug is a photo website with a shop and what they actually need is a good client gallery. This post goes through the differences, as of 17 August 2026.

SmugMug in three paragraphs

SmugMug, Inc. is based in Mountain View, California, and sells photo websites: portfolio, galleries, print sales through partner labs, video, mobile apps for iOS, Android and Apple TV (SmugMug: About). The promise is unlimited storage for photos and video in every plan. RAW files cost extra through the “Source” add-on.

Three plans, billed annually: Direct at $20 a month without selling, Portfolio at $23.50 with selling, your own domain and watermarks, Pro at $37 with price lists per gallery and client favourites; Enterprise on request (SmugMug: Plans). On sales SmugMug keeps 15 % of the mark-up you set yourself; 85 % stays with you. There is a 14-day trial and no free plan; under the terms, fees paid are generally non-refundable (SmugMug: Terms).

Prices in US dollars only. For Europe the default lab is Loxley Colour in Glasgow, outside the EU since Brexit. According to the privacy policy, the servers are “in the United States or other countries”; SmugMug is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and provides Standard Contractual Clauses as a PDF, in English (SmugMug: Privacy).

The prices: dollars against euros

SmugMug (annual, US$) aftersnap (monthly, € incl. VAT)
Entry Direct: $20, unlimited photos, no selling Basic: €7.99, 50 GB, 15 galleries
Middle Portfolio: $23.50, selling, domain, watermarks Pro: €14.99, 300 GB, unlimited galleries
Top Pro: $37, price lists, favourites Studio: €24.99, 1 TB

The comparison is lopsided, and we’ll say so: SmugMug sells unlimited storage, we sell storage in tiers. If you want to keep 5 terabytes of archive online, you pay $20 at SmugMug and €99 with us. If you deliver one wedding after another and let the galleries expire after a year or two, 300 GB or a terabyte goes a long way, and you pay in euros, monthly, and can cancel any month. The euro prices are as shown for Germany, including 19 % VAT; other EU countries apply their own rate, and businesses with a valid VAT number are billed ex VAT under reverse charge. Annual billing with us is ten months for twelve.

What guests see, and what they don’t get

No expiry date. SmugMug has no native expiry date for galleries; to close a gallery, you change the password or set it to private (a request has been open in the SmugMug forum for years). At aftersnap every gallery has an expiry date if you want one.

Other languages only via a translation widget. SmugMug’s guest-facing gallery isn’t available natively in German, to name one example. What there is, is an optional Google Translate element. aftersnap shows galleries in 32 languages (all 24 official EU languages and eight more, translated by hand, switching automatically to the guest’s browser setting) and the dashboard in 14 languages, English included.

No face search. SmugMug has no selfie search for guests in the core product; the AI search in the Source add-on recognises objects rather than people. At aftersnap, face search is part of the Studio plan: guests upload a selfie and see the photos they appear in, no account needed. Content search is included from Pro: dance, cake, flowers, view as filters, combinable with a person. We compute both on our own servers in Europe; no third-party service ever sees the photos. And we don’t train any AI on your photos: not third-party, not our own. Face-search data is used only inside the gallery it was created for and disappears with it.

Slideshow without music. SmugMug’s slideshow block runs without music; music used to go through the third-party ProShow Web. Our slideshow is included from Pro with music from a licensed aftersnap library, as the first impression before the gallery opens.

Proofing. At SmugMug, client favourites come only with the Pro plan. At aftersnap every gallery is in one of two modes: the delivery gallery for the evening the couple sees their photos for the first time, and the proofing gallery in the Studio plan, where clients select and write notes straight on the image, you edit and replace, and the client is told as soon as the download is open. Everything on the image, nothing in email threads.

Where SmugMug is clearly ahead

  • Unlimited storage for photos and video, in every plan. Nobody else has that at this price.
  • Photo website with portfolio. SmugMug is a website first and a gallery second. If you want both in one place, that’s where you get it. aftersnap is a client gallery with a profile page.
  • Print shop with labs and payouts, even if the default lab for Europe sits in the UK.
  • Video up to 20 minutes per file. Video is on our roadmap.
  • Mobile apps for iOS, Android and Apple TV. Our galleries are built for the phone and run in the browser, selfie search included, nothing to install.
  • 24 years on the market. aftersnap is young and continuously developed: what you read here is the state of things in August 2026. Team accounts, video and a blog module that lets your galleries live inside your own website are on the roadmap, and updates arrive continuously, at no extra cost, for every account. Start with us today and you get more gallery every month.

Where aftersnap is different

  • Euros, VAT included, cancel any month. No exchange-rate swings; after the paid period ends, your galleries stay online for 30 days, then go offline, and a week later we cancel the account. Nothing is deleted in that time, and if you book again, everything is back at once.
  • Dashboard in 14 languages, galleries in 32.
  • Face search and content search for guests, computed in Europe.
  • Slideshow with music, expiry date, download control per gallery (no download, single images, ZIP; favourites as their own ZIP), watermark on every download from Pro.
  • Hosting in the EU, data processing agreement in your account. SmugMug hosts in the US under the Data Privacy Framework and Standard Contractual Clauses: legally covered, but a different continent.
  • Lightroom as a publish service. Both have a Lightroom plugin; ours creates the gallery and Sets from Lightroom Classic and keeps them in sync (Lightroom plugin). Included from Pro.
  • Vendor galleries for venue, florist and planner (vendor galleries).

Who SmugMug remains the better choice for

If you want to keep a large archive online permanently and storage is the criterion. If you need portfolio website, sales and gallery in one place and accept dollar billing for it. If you deliver video as well, or want apps for your clients.

SmugMug alternative: who aftersnap is for

If the gallery, for you, is there to show and hand over. If your guests don’t all read English: galleries come in 32 languages, all 24 official EU languages among them. If guests should find themselves with a selfie. If you want to pay in euros and know the photos are stored in the EU. If you publish from Lightroom Classic.

Switching: how it works in practice

  1. Create an account and run both in parallel. 14-day Studio trial, no payment details. Your SmugMug galleries stay up for as long as your account there is active.
  2. Publish the next delivery from Lightroom. The photos are in your catalogue; with the plugin, the gallery is a right-click away. The source is your catalogue rather than the old gallery, so every image arrives in the version you approved.
  3. Cancel SmugMug only when nothing is needed there any more. Under its own terms, SmugMug doesn’t refund pro rata; download beforehand whatever clients might still need.
  4. Move your domain. You set up your own domain at aftersnap in the Studio plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my SmugMug galleries into aftersnap? The route is the Lightroom plugin: the selection is in your catalogue, and the gallery is created straight from it, with no detour through the old gallery.

Does aftersnap have unlimited storage? In the Unlimited plan at €99, with a fair-use rule. For most delivery galleries, 300 GB or a terabyte is enough: galleries expire, storage frees up.

Can I sell prints with aftersnap? aftersnap concentrates on delivery and presentation. If the shop is your revenue, SmugMug or Pic-Time are built for that.

Can I upload videos? Not yet. Video is on our roadmap.
