Sending gallery links from your own mailbox

Under “Email Sending” you store your SMTP access so gallery links go out from your own mailbox. Without it, aftersnap sends them for you, with “via aftersnap” in the sender.

Before you start
  • Sending from your own mailbox is part of your plan.
  • You know your mail provider SMTP details: host, port, username and password.

What your own access changes #

Sending works either way. Without your own access, aftersnap sends the email for you: the sender shows your name with the addition “via aftersnap”, and the address belongs to aftersnap. Replies from your clients still reach you, because the reply address points at your inbox.

With your own SMTP access, your own address appears as the sender and the email leaves your mailbox. That is the difference: no added wording in the sender, and deliverability rests on your own domain instead of ours.

Entering your SMTP access #

Menu with your name Email Sending SMTP Configuration

  1. Enter “SMTP Host”, for example smtp.example.com.
  2. Enter “Port”, “Username” and the password.
  3. Pick the value your provider gives you under “Encryption”. TLS over STARTTLS is the recommended route.
  4. Enter “From Name” and “From Email”. These two are what your clients see.
  5. Click “Save”.

The password field stays empty after saving. Empty means unchanged; only a new entry replaces the stored password.

Important

The sender address has to belong to the mailbox whose access you enter here. Most recipients drop a foreign sender address into spam.

Sending a test email #

Menu with your name Email Sending SMTP Configuration

  1. Enter an address you can look into in the test email field.
  2. Click “Send Test”.
Check the result

“Sent” with a checkmark has to appear next to the button, and the email has to be in the mailbox. If it says “Error”, one of the access values is wrong.

If it does not work
The test reports an error.
Check port and encryption together: 587 goes with TLS over STARTTLS, 465 with SSL. If the two do not match, the connection breaks off.
The provider rejects the login.
Many providers want a separate app password for programs instead of your normal one. Create one and enter it here.
The test email lands in spam.
Check that the sender address and the mailbox belong together. With your own domain, SPF and DKIM belong in your provider settings.

Menu with your name Email Sending Email Log

The email log lists every message aftersnap sent for you, with recipient, subject and delivery status. When someone says they never received anything, this is where you see whether the email left the building.
